Top 10 Google Advanced Search Tips and Tricks
Google is the world’s most popular search engine with over 60% market share. While its basic search function is fairly simple to use, there are a number of more advanced features that can be used to improve your results. Here are the top 10 Google Advanced Search Tips:
#1 Use Explicit Phrases
Google gives you the option to include or omit certain phrases in your search. For example, if you want to search for websites about Paris, simply enter paris NOT france in the search box. If you only want to include specific keywords found in a phrase, put them all inside quotes like “Paris France”.
#2 Exclude Words
You also have the option to exclude certain words using minus signs (-) in front of them. For example, if you are searching for photos about Paris but want to exclude any mention of the Eiffel Tower, or “tour”, simply type paris +photos -eiffel tower (don’t forget to put a space between paris and +photos).
#3 Words in the Text
If you don’t want the second word to be excluded, put a tilde (~) sign before it. For example, if you would like to find websites about Paris but only ones that mention the Eiffel Tower (but still include “Paris France”), then type paris ~tour (don’t forget to put a space between paris and ~tour).
#4 Words in the Title
If you want to search for websites that have a specific word in the title, type allinurl: followed by your keyword. For example, if I wanted to find articles about how to make Parisian macarons, I would enter allinurl:Parisian macarons intitle:”How To”.
#5 Words in the URL
If you want to find websites that have a specific word in the URL, type allinurl: followed by your keyword. For example, if I wanted to find websites about Paris that mention the Eiffel Tower, I would enter allinurl:Paris Eiffel tower.
#6 Related Search
If you would like to find websites that are similar to a particular one, type related: followed by the URL of the website. For example, if I find a good recipe for macarons and would like to find more but with slight variations (i.e., chocolate macarons), I would enter related:www.ehow.com/recipe/chocolate-macarons into the search box.
#7 Internal Links
The benefits of Internal Linking are twofold:
1) It helps keep people on your site for a longer period of time.
2) it helps Google understand your website’s structure. To find pages that are internally linked to a particular page, use the link: command followed by the URL of the page you want to find links to. For example, if I wanted to find pages that are linked to the How To Make Parisian Macaron page, I would enter link:www.ehow.com/recipe/how-to-make-parisian-macarons into the search box.
#8 External Links
The benefits of External Links include:
- Increased Domain Authority through link building
- Enhanced Site Popularity through increased inbound links
- Enhanced Crawl Rate by Google Bots
- External Linking helps search engines know which websites you deem authoritative and relevant. To find pages that are linked to a particular page, use the link: command followed by the URL of the page being linked from. For example, if I wanted to find pages that are linked from the How To Make Parisian Macaron page, I would enter link:www.ehow.com/ into the search box.
#9 Keyword Clusters
Keyword clusters help with your SEO because:
1) It helps you maximize your chance to be found for searches related to that topic.
2) it can help you identify keywords that may have relatively less competition than others. To find pages on the website about a particular term, type allintitle: followed by your keyword (or keywords). For example, if I wanted to find pages on the website about macarons, I would enter into the search box:
site:ehow.com macarons
By using any of these tips, you can help make your website more visible to both your customers and Google!
#10 Long Tail Keyword Research
Long Tail keywords are those that are more specific and less common than the head terms that people usually use when conducting a search. They are often three or four words in length, and because of their specificity, have less competition than their shorter counterparts.
To find long tail keywords related to your topic, type allintitle: followed by your topic (or topics) into the search box.
